Ok, kind of a strong statement to make about a piece of fabric. But it is true!
My love affair with Prefold diapers began when my oldest son was about a year old. A friend gave me 2 dozen Prefold diapers from her overstocked diaper stash. They were so much softer and cushier that the disposable diapers I had been using. I figured I had to try them.
Well, I have never turned back. They were so simple, so basic that they were beautiful. No muss no fuss. No fancy prints or embellishments just beautiful soft cotton.
Then I began trying other cloth diapers; fitted, contours, all-in-ones, different diaper covers. I tried ‘em all. Printed, organic, hemp. Velour cloth diapers! - what an exciting adventure. But I always came back to my love, Prefold diapers.
Reasons to love Prefold diapers!
- Fluffy Soft - There is nothing softer than a prefold diaper fresh out of the dryer. Ok, maybe a baby bum is softer. But as far as diapers go, a freshly dried prefold diaper is warm and soft and fluffy. Don’t even use a basket. Just hug this warm mound of Prefold goodness.
- Custom Fit - A prefold diaper can be custom folded to fit any baby. Extra layers can be added where your baby needs it. You just fold the diaper to put the extra padding where it is needed the most. There are several different folds. And mamas are making up new ones every day. A prefold diaper can be adjusted, tweaked and folded to fit any baby’s needs. Folding a prefold is easier than you think. Check out our handy guide to folding a prefold diaper.
- Cheap, cheap, cheap! - You just can’t beat the price of a prefold diaper. Prefold diapers are usually about $2 a piece. When I think of the fancy-schmancy custom made all-in-ones at $30 each, my love for prefolds just grows.
- Easy to Wash – Prefold diapers don’t need any special attention to wash. Any detergent free of whiteners and brighteners is fine. Nothing special required. You can through them in your washer with the HOTTEST water possible. No need to baby these cloth baby diapers. Prefold diapers are meant to hold up to industrial washing.
- Easy to dry – And of course, if prefold diapers are easy to wash. They must be easy to dry to complete the package. Although prefolds have multiple layers, there is no bulk. Prefold diapers are folded to create the absorbent layers. In the laundry, the prefold is unfolded. The diaper opens up and dries im one pass in the dryer. Oh yes, and prefolds dry quickly on a clothes line as well.
Grow with your baby - The infant prefolds are first used as diapers for your tiny newborn. Then when they move up to premium size prefolds, the infant prefolds can be used for burp cloths, hand drying, etc. I keep a few in the car for messy snacking as we are running errands. Infant prefolds can also be use as doublers on older babies. This is especially handy for a heavy wetter at night in conjunction with a premium size prefold. Then as you enter toddler hood the prefolds are great for toilet training mishaps. Then they can be handed down to the next baby, And then when all the babies are grown Prefold diapers can be used around the house as general cleaning rags
